This issue of Ruckus set out with a mission – to disprove two stereotypes (or one stereotype and one myth if you prefer). The first of these is to challenge the view, all too commonly seen in mainstream news media that young people are a bad lot, generally up to no good and, given the chance, to be avoided. What nonsense. Just look at any of the articles in this issue to get closer to the truth, but particularly the campaign being run by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (page 7) to reveal a truer image of today’s teenagers. We profile some of those young people chosen to represent real youth in England and look at the contribution they’re making to their local area and, more crucially, to their own lives.
Which leads us on to part two of our mission – to challenge the myth that ‘there’s nothing to do around here.’ Of course we accept that there could always be more, that it could be cheaper, nearer and run for longer and wouldn’t involve having to change buses twice and leave at 8.30 to get home. But nothing! Ask Amy Wrangles, who is a member of Hertfordshire Youth Board (see page 16) and you’ll get the idea of what we mean.
Or leap at the chance to take part in a bit of research, environmental conservation work, write some poetry or a short story, visit a gallery or make a film. It’s all here in Ruckus. Yes, we’ve gone all arty for this issue (must be the announcement of the Oscar nominations that was happening as we put this together), showcasing the creative and cultural industries and outlining how you can get your foot in the door. Nothing to do? We challenge you to get your creative juices flowing!
Our next issue will be late spring and we’d love to hear from you about stuff that’s happening in your life and important to you, what you’ve been doing and what you think of it. E-mail Andy or Esther at The NYA.
